Partner School Spotlight: A Long-Term Mission Partnership
For many years, Scone Grammar School has partnered with the Loaves & Fishes Program to send students on service and immersion trips to Vanuatu. What began as a single school trip has grown into a rich, ongoing relationship that is transforming lives in both countries.
A Journey of Faith, Service & Connection
Each year, groups of students and staff from Scone Grammar School travel to Vanuatu with Loaves & Fishes. Through shared worship, classroom visits, community projects and everyday life together, students learn what it means to serve in Jesus’ name and to see the world through the eyes of their Ni-Vanuatu brothers and sisters.
Over time, these trips have become more than a one-off experience. They have grown into a long-term partnership that shapes school culture, deepens faith and creates real, lasting impact in Vanuatu communities.
Helping Establish a School for Students Who Need It Most
One of the most significant outcomes of this partnership has been the development of a new school in Vanuatu for students who cannot afford standard school fees.
Through repeated trips, relationship-building, and listening to local leaders, Scone Grammar School has been able to:
- Support the development of a new school for students from low-income families.
- Provide classroom resources, equipment and learning materials for teachers and students.
- Offer mentoring and support for a local Vanuatu teacher as the school grows.
- Contribute financially through staff salary sacrificing to help fund the teacher’s wage.
The result is a school that offers real hope and opportunity – a place where children who once had no access to education can now learn, grow and look to the future with confidence.
Mutual Transformation: Two Schools, One Partnership
This story is not only about what Australia can give. It is about mutual transformation. As relationships deepen year after year, both schools are changed.
Student Sponsorship
Families at Scone Grammar now have the opportunity to support the school in a more direct way by sponsoring a student. Funds from student sponsorship go directly to support the running of the school and allow us to provide education for free to students who would otherwise be trapped in the cycle of generational poverty.
Looking to the Future
Hosting Vanuatu Youth Leaders
- Vanuatu youth leaders visiting and staying at Scone Grammar School.
- Observe and learn about school leadership, pastoral care and classroom practice.
- Share their faith, culture and experiences with Australian students.
- Assist in classrooms and activities, bringing fresh perspective and energy.
Welcoming Vanuatu Teachers for Extended Stays
Building on this, the partnership hopes to expand to host Vanuatu teachers for up to a year at Scone Grammar School. This would provide:
- In-depth, hands-on professional development for Vanuatu teachers.
- Time for mentoring, resource-sharing and collaborative planning.
- Ongoing cross-cultural learning for the Scone Grammar School staff and students.
These extended visits will have a long-term ripple effect as teachers carry skills, confidence and new ideas back to their communities in Vanuatu.
Connected Classrooms: Learning Together Across the Ocean
The relationship no longer needs to depend only on once-a-year trips. Through technology and creativity, the two schools are hoping to connect throughout the year.
Collaborative Zoom Classes
Classes from Scone Grammar School and the Vanuatu partner school hope to meet via Zoom to learn side-by-side. In these sessions, students could:
- Share stories, culture and language.
- Explore topics together from both Australian and Ni-Vanuatu perspectives.
- Ask questions and build friendships across borders.
These online classes will make the partnership part of everyday learning, not just a special occasion.
Scone Grammar School Students Tutoring Vanuatu Students
Long term, we hope to offer Scone Grammar School students the opportunity to tutor Vanuatu students. This would include help with:
- English language and literacy skills.
- Numeracy and foundational maths.
- Study habits and encouragement to keep learning.
As they tutor, Scone Grammar School students would have the chance to grow in leadership, empathy and responsibility, discovering how their skills can bless others.
